Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

As the name suggests, OCD consists of two main components: obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions relate to mental preoccupation (e.g. I did not lock my front door), which lead to a compulsion to behave a certain way (e.g. double checking if the door is locked). The compulsion is completed to reduce the distress related to the obsession. The issues that commonly concern people with OCD are:

  • Cleanliness/ Order
  • Counting/Hoarding
  • Safety/Checking
  • Religious/Moral views

Worrying about something or double checking you've completed a task can be useful, however, when we have OCD this is done to the extreme. That is, a large part of our lives are consumed by our obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours, which can impact on our ability to complete day-to-day activities, relationships, and work and study.
