Grief is a natural, normal reaction to the loss of something or someone. Although we typically view grief in the context of the death of
a loved one, grief can also be experienced by the loss of a relationship, a job, or a certain way of living. Exposure to a loss is
complicated, non-linear and experienced differently by different people. There is no right or wrong way to grieve, however some ways of
grieving produce more healthy outcomes..
Despite the significant emotional pain that we experience in the process, grieving itself is not dangerous. In fact, taking time to process the grief leads to quicker and more healthy outcomes in the long term. Not processing grief properly however can be dangerous. Grief can be unhealthy when we try to avoid our painful emotions. Although, the avoidance of painful emotions is understandable, ultimately, it is unhelpful as the emotional turmoil builds up internally and eventually erupts. Unprocessed grief can manifest in many ways, including: straining other relationships, alcohol and drug misuse, and social isolation and withdrawal. Therefore, to ensure you process your loss more effectively, therapy can be helpful when dealing with grief and loss.
