Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is characterised by the interchanging of two opposing emotional ranges: mania and depression. That is, when we experience bipolar we are consumed by extreme periods of both emotional highs and lows. During the 'lows' you may experience symptoms consistent with depression (e.g. sadness, anhedonia, fatigue, lack of motivation, hopelessness and worthlessness etc.). Conversely, you experience the 'highs' feeling of euphoria, extreme risk taking (e.g. drink driving, unprotected sex with multiple partners; spending your entire financial savings etc.). Ultimately, the degree to which you experience these 'symptoms' depends on the type of bipolar you have..

In psychology, two different types of bipolar are recognised (Bipolar I; Bipolar II). The main distinction between the two types relate to severity of the manic episode(s). In bipolar I the disorder presents itself as an 'full blown' manic episode that typically lasts longer and is more likely to be extreme in nature, often resulting in the need for the individual to be hospitalised due to the severity.  In contrast,  the 'highs' in Bipolar II relates to 'hypo-mania', which is less intense, but still associated with potentially dangerous risk-taking behaviours. Given the extreme emotional range that individuals with Bipolar experience, it is critical that you seek help in order to reduce the risk to your well-being.
